Blasphemy?
The world is following the viewing and funeral of Pope John Paul II, as perhaps we should. But, would you like to put a wager on who the next Pope will be, or what his name will be?? According to this article in the Washington Post:
[I]n addition to wagering on the meaning of Britney Spears's bump, or the color of the bonus ball in the Irish National Lottery, gamblers around the world can log onto paddypower.com, click on the Novelties section and put their money on Dionigi Tettamanzi, who is rating 11 to 4 odds in the race for the papacy. Or they can take their chances on Father Dougal Maguire of Craggy Island, Ireland, a long shot at 1,000 to 1.
That just doesn't seem kosher to me.

Maybe I don't understand here...but isn't blasphemy the act of insulting or showing contempt or lack of reverence for God? (not the pope)
I am in no way trying to show any disrespect here, and maybe it's just because I am not Catholic...but it seems to me that Catholics worshipped the pope...yes, he was the Catholic leader, but he was not, nor will he ever be God...so I really don't understand all of the news broadcasting each move of the body, throwing "holy water" on the man...geez, let the man rest in peace!
As for choosing a new pope...there are always going to be ignorant people such as those gamblers in Ireland...but pope John Paul II said himself, there's no harm in gambling and it doesnt "become morally unacceptable [until] they deprive someone of what is necessary to provide for his needs and those of others..."
OK, it wasn't meant to be taken that seriously, like almost everything else on this blog. Yes, blasphemy is a profane act toward God. I wasn't really being literal, but showing that I feel that it is not quite right to be betting on who the next Pope is. And Catholics don't worship the Pope. He REPRESENTS God, but we don't believe that he is God. If we're going to get technical about everything that I write, this blog is gonna get real boring real fast.
